Ian Berry’s ‘Material Masterpieces’ (Brenda Emmanus, BBC) have amazed many people around the world with his detailed skills. While many have seen his work on the internet he gets his most admirers when they see his work in person, where you can see the detail and depths.
‘The reaction to my work in person is a million times that of what it’s like when they see it on the net on a small iphone’ Said Ian.
This book aims to bridge this gap as well as be a record of his career that has spanned ove a decade. While being up close and personal in real life is hard to replicate, the book has beautiful images of his work as well as detail shots that shows the depth and texture that he has in his work.
The book helps one find more about the artist that has been written about all over the world and graced many a magazine cover. It goes over many of the stories behind the work, as its much more than just created with denim. Most of his work is about community and his last body of work, Behind Closed Doors touched many people.
In fact, it’s a testament to his work that the forward is by Brenda Emmanus who is the respected BBC’s Art and Culture Correspondent who not only covered one of Ian’s solo shows, she went back a second time for the next one. From a lady who did a documentary on the Tate, this is quite a statement.
‘In a world littered with creative talent, where the artistic and innovative put their personal spin on our professional and cultural lives; it is always a thrill when something or someone unique manages to cut through and shine’.
The book also has stunning images of his installations like the Secret Garden in New York and the Laundromat at Miami Basel shot by Lucinda Grange. It also covers some of his well-known portrait commissions, like of Debbie Harry, Giorgio Armani and Ayrton Senna.
The book was pre-launched at the end of April at an event in Kentucky, USA and all the copies there sold out before it ended. On Monday 21st you will be able to buy on www.ianberry.art - there is also many book launches in the planning so watch this space.
