From artist Ian Berry
There isn’t a person who hasn’t been affected by the Covid-19 virus. Many in the worst possible way. My issues are nothing in comparison and I soon realised I wasn't stuck indoors, but safe indoors - however I was stuck with a creative issue.
Before turning all the my work to denim I set up photoshoots and I’d spent the last month planning many, now postponed. To continue with Behind Closed Doors, I couldn’t get out of mine.
I knew many photographers anchored at home. There’s a photographer, equipment, people, and accommodation after all. But wouldn't that be selfish of me to ask all those people who had lost months of work themselves.
I spoke to a few and while they jumped at the idea of their work changing indigo it sat wrong. At the same time I was getting many images and I couldn’t have turned all blue, I also realised I was in my own home - this horrible virus making me realise, what’s in front of me and what I have.
But I was fascinated with the photography being sent so I spoke to the Museum Rijswijk and we came to the conclusion that we should show these photographs in the museum alongside my Solo Exhibition.
So we invite you to submit your interpretation of this period.
What do you say? You are in?
I’d presume many of you are taking pictures anyway. While we are isolated, we are all connected and it would be good to make a community here - and I truly hope you and all your family are ok.
you can also put them on a social media page tagging
@ianberry.art @staybehindcloseddoors and #staybehindcloseddoors
You can submit you photographs portraying your period in self isolation. Many will be curated to be displayed in the Museum, with the likelihood it will move on to others. You can see some entries already here.
However, If you would like the idea of it being turned to denim you can look below for inspiration and in more detail what I would be looking for as I also aim to document this period.
It’s open to photographers of any level.

inspiration
I don’t want to give too many rules or restrictions and this is only if you would like to try make one with my work in mind
The photos
need not show the whole room, perhaps just a crop in the bed or on a chair.
can be in the a kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom, garden, balcony… view from the window.. There’s lots of locations.
could show the closeness, they could also perhaps portray the irritation of one another – it need not be ‘you’, but play a character
while mine are sombre, my own experiences of this period has brought many people together in a household.
would ideally be sharp and in focus, which may not be your normal style as well as a good light/dark balance. But not against seeing other styles.
be a Rembrandt style of lighting on the people, to be able to use a range of denim shades (basically, a bit dynamic and not flat)
Think of what is going on now - living room exercise, working from home, all watching different devices, playing games, video messaging, more sleeping time…
needn’t even have a person in it, there may be signs of life without being in the picture. Many of you will be together, but some some of you will be alone.
you need not strive for the ultimate photograph, I’d love to see ideas and stories. They need not look ‘pro’
